For the last few years, cybercriminals have been focusing on another highly profitable attack vector: ransomware. It consists of a targeted attack or sporadic campaign often using spear phishing to let the ransomware code infect machines and systems. According to CSO Magazine, 93% of phishing emails contained ransomware in March of 2016 alone. Ransomware uses encryption to deny access to user’s data or resources. For a fee (ransom), the user or organization will get control back over his machine or system. According the to the FBI, the IC3 received 2,673 complaints identified as ransomware.
